Abstract

1348883 Laminates B A CHAPLIN 19 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 20228/70 Heading B5N A plate-like element, e.g. a tile, comprises a substantially flat-backed sandwich construction heat-sealed by a high frequency welding process about its periphery, the construction comprising a plastics backing layer 12, a plastics facing layer 13 and an intermediate foamed plastics layer 14, said foam 14 being retained under compression in the direction of its thickness and element being hermetically-sealed as a result of the heatsealing thereby preventing recovery of the compressed foam. The backing layer 12 may be provided with an impact adhesive on its exposed face protected by a tear-off paper sheet. The backing, facing and foam layers may all be of polyvinyl chloride but in the preferred embodiment the facing layer comprises a sandwich of a polyvinyl chloride sheet 15, an aluminium foil 17 and an outer sheet of polyester 16, said exposed polyester suitably being pigmented and/or embossed. The element may be made by placing the superposed layers on a base-plate 18 which comprises an aluminium earth plate 19 surrounded by a glass electrode strip 20 and supported on a resilient pad 22, e.g. of rubber. An upper platen 23 is brought down to compress the layers prior to radio frequency welding via the electrode strips 20.
