Abstract

1345648 Knitting-machines LAWSON-HEMPHILL INC 24 April 1972 [29 April 1971 5 April 1972] 18818/72 Heading D1C A yarn storage-feeder comprises a drum and a yarn guide rotatable relative to one another, bars mounted in slots in the drum movable to advance yarn turns, and means for sensing yarn turns on the drum and engaging the drive of the device via a pneumatic control. The drive may be locked-on so that the device feeds yarn positively. - In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 4 the drum 26 is rotated by a drive belt 90 which can be pressed against the rim 88 by a pulley 108. Yarn is guided by an eye 36 to the drum and entrained thereby with the accumulated turns depress a pivoted finger 114. The pulley is supported by a lever 100 and urged away from the rim by a spring 112. A piston 98 is thereby pressed against the diaphragm 46 of an air chamber 44 supplied by an air-line 60. When the finger 114 is depressed a lever 116 is forced downwards to open a ball valve 64 so venting the air chamber 44 via an axial bore 52. The piston is no longer upheld against the force of spring 112, which swings the pulley 108 away from the rim. Simultaneously brake shoes 106 are placed against the top of the drum. The drive is reengaged when the turns are insufficient to depress the finger. Yarn is normally withdrawn substantially axially via a guide eye 38, against the adjustable resistance of flyer 32. If the device is to function as a positive feed, the drive is lockedon by lever 160 supporting an extension 161 of lever 100. The yarn is withdrawn substantially tangentially via guide eyes 165 and 38. The yarn turns are moved axially down the drum by slats 82 projecting through slots 80 in the drum. They are moved downwards and outwards by eccentrically mounted rise-andfall cams 72, 73. In the embodiment of Figure 9 yarn turns are wound on a stationary drum 226 by a rotatable arm 370, and moved axially by slots 282. The drum is held stationary relative to a fixed upper support by a toothed disc 365 in engagement toothed wheels 360, 361. The disc is mounted on a rotatable inclined bearing 362 which thereby permits the arm 370 to rotate between the stationary drum and support. Yarn turns are sensed by a finger 314 and a lever 300 bearing pulley 308 is operated via pneumatic control as in the previous embodiment. A finger 234 of a stop motion sensitive to absence of turns is also provided.
