Abstract

Apparatus for applying wax to a yarn comprises a support which rotates a block of paraffin wax about an axis, a first spring which urges the block along the axis towards the unsupported end of the block and against both an impact member which substantially bears the force of the spring, and a further member urged by a second spring against the unsupported end of the block, the yarn passing between the further member and the block. The further member comprises a generally circular plate having at one side a circular recess in which the impact member is situated. The end of the second spring remote from the block bears against a rotatable helical cam member so that the spring force is adjustable. The apparatus may be positioned in an automatic winding machine having a plurality of winding stations moving relative to a tender. The tender can actuate a lever mechanism to move the impact member and thus the wax block against the first spring so that a yarn can be inserted. A spring is provided to return the impact member to its normal position. The support for the block of wax has a pulley disc driven by a belt and is secured either directly or through a clutch thereto. The clutch is disengaged by an electromagnet when a yarn feeler senses the absence of a yarn. The support is pivotably movable out of the belt engaging position into a wax block replacing position by a mechanism actuated when a feeler detects that the block is almost depleted. The tender replaces the block.
