Abstract

1,238,262. Banding apparatus. LUMMUS INDUSTRIES Inc. 7 July, 1969 [25 Sept., 1968], No. 34192/69. Heading B8C. Banding apparatus comprises a strap feeding and securing apparatus movable from one set of strap guides 32 which extend around a bale 18 to be banded to a second set of strap guides 32 spaced therefrom, so as to enable a number of bands to be placed around the bale 18. The bale 18 is compressed between a platen 16 and a beam 10 of a baling press having a pivoted door 12. The strap feeding apparatus driven along a track 22 by rollers 23 driven by a reversible electric motor 26, and has an hydraulic cylinder 42, the piston-rod 43 of which carries a roller (44, Figs. 4, 5, not shown) adapted to be engaged in notches (39) in a bar 38 extending parallel to the track 22 so as to align the apparatus 21 with the guides 32. Each guide 32 comprises fixed guide sections 32a, 32b and a section 32c secured to the platen 16, the sections 32c, 32b registering with each other when the bale 18 is compressed. Pivoted closure members 33 on the guide section 32b can be opened to release the band from the guide 32. The band is fed to the apparatus 21 through a tube 31, out of the apparatus 21 through a guide 34, through the guide 32, and into the apparatus 21 through a guide 36, where it is sealed and severed at a station 37. A chain of securing clips 28 is fed from a roll 29 to the apparatus 21. The apparatus 21 is held in a position clear of the door 12 for removal of the bale 18 by engagement of the piston-rod 43 in a notch (41) on the bar. A circuit controlling movement of the apparatus is described (Figs. 4, 7, not shown).
