Wallpaper is wound into a roll at 1, drops at 1<SP>1</SP> on to a belt 3 along which it is pushed by a pusher 4 and down a ramp 5 into a loop 11 (at 1<SP>11</SP>) formed by two polythene webs 121 and 131 which are joined by heat-sealing at their leading edges and which are fed from reels 12 and 13 so that the roll 1<SP>11</SP> descends and the webs 12<SP>1</SP> and 13<SP>1</SP> may be sealed together (by means of a double line seal) above the roll 1<SP>11</SP> by a device 22 which cut off the wrapped roll (between the line seals) and thereby simultaneously forms a new loop 11. The webs 12<SP>1</SP> and 13<SP>1</SP> are fed from the reels 12 and 13 by rotating rollers 14 and 15 either by the winding device 2; or hydraulically or pneumatically. As the roll 1 is being wound, a member 24 is moved to the left in the Figure and acts by way of levers 25 and 27, rack 32, pinions 33 and 34, and a rack 23, on pinions on the ends of rollers 14 and 15, so that the diameter of the roll 1 determines the length of the loop. The pusher 4 is moved in direction 8, and the belt 3 in direction 9, to prevent unrolling of the roll 1<SP>1</SP>, by a common motor 21. A clamp 36 is moved by an hydraulic piston and cylinder 38 to move the webs to the electrically-heated sealing head 35 which comprises upper and lower dies. The wrapped roll drops (at 1<SP>1111</SP>) on to a conveyer which conveys it to a unit where the polythene is heat-shrunk on to the roll.
