Abstract

988,508. Wrapping machines. C. F. TAYLOR (UNITY DESIGNS) Ltd. March 25, 1964, No, 12538/64. Heading B8C. A wrapping machine comprises supports for two separate sources of wrapping film, a pair of members movable to and fro in a horizontal plane so that webs of film from both supplies are trapped between them, with means carried by the members to sever the webs and heat seal the pair of ends thus formed, and a platform to support goods when placed upon the sealed ends while the webs are sealed as before above the goods to enclose said goods. Wrapping film from supplies 18, 22 is fed over rollers so that it passes between the movable members 30, 36, one of which carries a heating wire. Operation of the pneumatic pistons 50, 51 pushes the members together, Fig. 7, while rollers on a bracket 92 and a roller 111 draw film from the supplies. The films are now trapped between the members and are severed by the heated wire, which also seals the pair of ends thus formed on opposite sides of the line of severance. When the members are withdrawn, Fig. 8, there is sufficient slack film drawn from the supplies to allow goods to fall between the films and on to the platform 60, without setting up undesirable tensions in the web. The films may then be sealed above the goods. The wrapped goods are ejected from the machine, Fig. 10, down a ramp 70, when a piston 80 operates a rod 76. The operation of the cycle is repeated automatically. The position of the rollers 99<SP>1</SP>, 107 may be adjusted according to the size of the goods to be wrapped. The two rollers 99<SP>2</SP>, 109 immediately above the movable members are set to hold the film away from the members so as to prevent premature contact with the heating wire. The platform is also height adjustable according to the size of the goods to be wrapped and may be piston operated in order to control the lowering of the goods into the wrapping position. Rapid operation of the machine is facilitated by cooling the contacting faces of the movable members. The goods are usually wrapped in heatshrinkable film, which may be multi-ply, and after ejection are conveyed through a heated chamber 80 that the film is shrunk tightly on to the goods.
