In a pneumatically operated fastener driving tool including a driving piston 26, a driving operation may be started by actuation of a trigger 74 or by a hammer blow applied to a member 56. Actuation of the trigger moves a valve member 64 to permit compressed air in chamber 34 to pass via conduit 68 to a chamber 42, and a piston 40 is moved downwardly thus displacing a valve member 32 from its seat 28. Compressed air then flows into cylinder 24 and the driving piston 26 effects a working stroke. The cylinder space above the driving piston communicates with chamber 42 via port 84, tubular member 80 and channels 62. Release of the trigger will connect the chamber 42 to atmosphere and the pistons 26, 40 will return to the illustrated positions, return of the piston 26 being effected by compressed air in annular space 88 acting on an annular piston connected to the tubular member 80. Upon applying a hammer blow to the member 56, the piston 40 will be moved downwardly and the valve member 32 will be displaced from its seat in order that the driving piston may effect a working stroke. An auxiliary handle (118), (Fig. 1, not shown) may be attached to handle 12, and the tool when provided with the fixture 94 can be used for fixing tongued and grooved floorboards. After the hammer blow has been applied the pistons 26, 40 will immediately return to the positions illustrated.
