Abstract

1,111,230. Vices. E. M. TOROSSIAN. 31 Dec., 1965 [8 Jan., 1965], No. 55421/65. Heading B3B. A hydropneumatic control device, for attachment to a vice for locking the jaws, comprises a traction member P connected to the movable jaw M and extended through a stationary seat member S connected to the fixed jaw I, the member P being connected with a cylinder C which is slidably mounted in the seat S and forms a compression chamber 7 therewith for hydraulic fluid, the cylinder having a movable wall or piston 1 therein which divides the cylinder into two parts, one part A forming an hydraulic reservoir which communicates with the hydraulic compression chamber 7 through an orifice 4 in the end of the cylinder and the other part B forming a pneumatic chamber containing a pneumatically operable piston 8, the pneumatic piston having a plunger 9 connected thereto and extending through the movable wall or piston 1 for engaging in the orifice 4 and for movement into the hydraulic compression chamber 7 in response to movement of the pneumatic piston 8. After initial adjustment of the vice by the screw V, the closing and locking of the jaws is carried out by subjecting the pneumatic chamber B to air pressure in three steps. Firstly, compressed air acts on the movable wall or piston 1 so as to force hydraulic fluid from the reservoir A into the compression chamber 7. Secondly, the pneumatic piston 8 is advanced to engage its plunger 9 within the orifice 4 thus closing the hydraulic compression chamber 7. Thirdly, the air pressure is maintained behind the pneumatic piston 8 but the pressure is released from the part A of the cylinder to permit the pneumatic piston 8 to move in the cylinder thereby projecting the plunger 9 into the hydraulic compression chamber 7 so as to produce the necessary high pressure for locking the jaws of the vice. The three successive steps of operation of the control device are attained automatically by the movement of a control valve member 14, Fig. 5, in a chamber 15 which has ducts 21, 22 connected with the cylinder C.
