A hatch cover for the cargo hold of a container ship comprises at least two sections 1, 2 each including stiffening means 4 to render same structurally capable of supporting a substantial load of containers 5, a conventional gasketing and dogging arrangement at 7 to secure each section to the hatch coaming 3, dogs 8 to secure the adjacent abutting sides of said sections together, and an inflatable seal 6 for rendering the adjacent abutting sides of the sections water-tight.
