Abstract

1,218,021. Welding by fusion; making turbine blades. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd., and SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. 9 May, 1968 [11 May, 1967], No. 21908/67. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F1] Main blade portions 13, 14 of a flow directing blade, e.g. a blade for directing air entering a gas turbine engine, and having at least two chordwise spaced ribs 24, 25, 26, 27 are joined by simultaneously welding at least two pairs of the ribs by a beam of concentrated heat energy. Two pairs of opposed ribs 26, 27 are welded simultaneously by an electron beam which is subsequently used to weld the other pairs 24, 25 simultaneously. Alternatively two beams are used simultaneously. An insert 30 of the same metal, e.g. titanium alloy as the portions 13, 14 and projecting from both sides of the joint is used at each seam to provide a weld of greater thickness than the ribs. Nose and tail sections 10, 15 are connected to the main portions 13, 14 by argon shielded arc welding.
