Abstract
1,228,159. Welding by fusion. FIRTH BROWN Ltd., and H. W. KIRKBY. 5 Nov., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967], No. 38484/67. Heading B3R. In a turbine rotor wherein adjacent turbine discs are welded together to form the rotor shaft, a thin "buttering" layer of metal is secured, before welding, to each of the surfaces to be welded together, by explosive welding. The "buttering" layers tend to reduce faults, such as cracking, in the weld zones. Each buttering layer is of similar metal to that used for welding and is in the form of a wrought ring or plate. After buttering, each mating face is machined to a contour suitable for welding by methods such as argon-shielded arc, consumable electrode, submerged arc, electro-slag or combinations thereof. As shown, buttering layers are explosively welded to faces 18-25 of singlestage turbine discs 11, 12, 13 and softened or suitably heat-treated alloy steel end forgings 16, 17. In Fig. 5 (not shown), each turbine disc has more than one stage. The steel compositions of the various discs may differ.
