Abstract
1,209,510. Feeding webs. MASCHINEN-FABRIK GOEBEL G.m.b.H. 13 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 53792/68. Heading B8R. Apparatus for automatically maintaining a predetermined tension in a web 1, e.g. of paper, synthetic resin, fabric or the like, being unwound from a roll 3 comprises:-a variable displacement pump 6 driven by the shaft 5 of the roll 3; a roller 2 driven by a motor 4 and having a rotational speed proportional to the speed of the web 1 which passes over the roller; a fixed capacity hydraulic motor 10 coupled to the shaft 11 of the roller 2 and supplied by the pump 6 via a conduit 9; and a cylinder 15 having a piston 14 the position of which determines the capacity of pump 6, the cylinder being connected, on opposite sides of the piston respectively, to conduit 9 via conduits 16, 17 and to a pressure reducing valve 20 via a conduit 18. Before the unwinding operation is started, an auxiliary pump 23 driven by a motor 25 is energized so that conduits 21, 18 and the cylinder 15 are filled with fluid, the piston 14 then being at the top of its stroke so that the pump 6 has its maximum delivery capacity. The motor 4 is then started, and as the web 1 unwinds from roll 3 the pump 6 delivers fluid, from a tank 8, to the motor 10 which has a fixed capacity lower than the maximum delivery from the pump 6, whereby pressure builds up in conduit 9; this pressure is communicated to the upper part of cylinder 15, and piston 14 therefore moves to an equilibrium position, determined by the setting of valve 20, thereby adjusting the capacity of pump 6 so that the pressure in conduit 9 is also brought into correspondence with the setting of valve 20, this setting determines the tension in the web. Subsequent variations in pressure in conduit 9, caused, for example, by variations in web speed as the diameter of roll 3 decreases, are automatically corrected by corresponding variations in the position of piston 14, whereby the tension in the web is maintained constant. The system may include a change-over valve 19 to allow the roll 3 to be unwound in the opposite direction of rotation.
