[Also in Divisions D1, F2 and G3] A winding machine for winding rolls 66, Fig. 3, of yarns or fabric employs a positively infinitely variable gear G of the belt and expanding pulley type, Fig. 1 (not shown), the regulating force on the control lever 30 of the gear G being provided by a pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder unit 40. The yarns or fabric pass over a tension roller 76 suspended from an electrical tension-measuring device 80, the signals from which are fed to potentiometric control unit 84 with a pointer 90 indicating the tension and setting pointers 92 indicating upper and lower acceptable tension limits. Output signals from the unit 84 are fed to a fluid pressure control device 94 controlling the supply of pressurized fluid from a pump 96 to the cylinder 40. If the tension falls below or rises above the limit set by pointers 92, fluid at appropriate pressure is supplied to or exhausted from cylinder 40 to increase or decrease the force on control lever G, thereby increasing or decreasing the linear surface velocity of the roll 66 and restoring the tension to the desired range. If it is desired to wind at varying tension, a unit 84 is employed in which the setting pointers 92 progressively move along the calibrated tension scale as winding progresses. In an alternative arrangement, the unit 84 is omitted and regulating means are provided on cylinder 40 to maintain a constant pressure.
