Abstract
1,205,057. Alkali metal salicylates. TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc. 3 Oct., 1967 [12 April, 1967; 5 Sept., 1967], No. 44944/67. Heading C2C. Alkali metal salicylates are prepared by neutralizing salicylic acid with alkali metal carbonate in an aqueous reaction mixture that is maintained throughout the neutralization at a pH of not more than 8 and a temperature of not more than 60‹ C. Preferably, the salicylic acid used as starting material has an APHA colour rating (10/50) of less than 25 and contains less than 0.5 p.p.m. of iron and the alkali metal carbonate has less than 15 p.p.m. of iron. The process is also applicable to the preparation of the alkali metal salts of substituted salicylic acids, e.g. p-aminosalicylic acid, 5-t-butyl salicylic acid, 3-methyl-5-isopropylsalicylic acid, 3 - methyl - 4 - isopropylsalicylic acid, 4-hexylsalicylic acid, and 5-phenyl salicylic acid.
