Abstract
1,203,722. Cleaning and modifying metal surfaces. A. T. SQUIRE. Jan. 8, 1968, No. 1122/68. Headings C7E and C7U. A cleaning (solution pH below 5) for removing metal oxides from metals comprises an ammonium salt of an aliphatic polybasic alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid, sulphuric or phosphoric acid, an alkali metal phosphate, an anti-mold agent, and water. The anti-mold agent may be phenolic mercurial acetate or sodium benzoate. The solution may also contain a surfactant e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, and a gel forming agent. The carboxylic acid may be citric, oxalic, tartaric, malic, gluconic glucoheptonic glycollic or saccharic acids. In a specific example the solution consists of 4000 ml. water, 500 gm. ammonium citrate, 100 gm. sodium phosphate, 30 ml. sulphuric acid, and 5 gm. sodium benzoate.
