Abstract

1,201,552. Tufting machines. S. SHORROCK. 23 Dec., 1968 [13 Jan., 1968 (2)], Nos. 2013/68 and 2014/68. Heading DIG. In a tufting machine short tuffs are cut in an entry tube 16 and blown down a feed tube 2, by an air blast from a tube 17 controlled by a valve 18, to a needle 3 to be pushed into the needle by a ram 5 which moves with the needle for tuft insertion and is held in place as the needle is withdrawn to prevent tuft removal. The needle bar and rams are driven from cams or eccentrics on the shaft 14. In a modification Fig. 4 a double armed feed tube is provided so that more than one colour may be provided under control of a pattern mechanism. A latex backing may be poured over the short ends of the tufts after insertion to hold them in place.
