Abstract
1298066 Tufting machines KEYSTONE Ltd P BROWN and P HAWKINS 25 Feb 1970 9986/69 Heading DIG A tufting machine comprises a row of needles 17, 18 individually movable into and out of engagement with needle driving means 10, a selectively operable latching device being provided for each needle the device being movable into latching engagement with the corresponding needle to prevent its movement. The needle holders 17 are slidably pivoted at 19 in the needle beam 10 which is reciprocated by posts 11 supported on ball bearings in a fixed structure 13. The latching device comprises a lever 27 pivoted to structure 13, a recess 28 in the lever engaging (as shown) a projection 24 on the needle holder which is tilted by a spring 20. When patterning requirements cause the needle to be selected a pneumatic ram or solenoid 31 pivots lever 27 to release projection 24, the lever nose 29 engaging limb 23 to pivot the needle clockwise to engage notch 21 beneath the needle bar abutment 22, the needle descending with the bar to form a tuft. On deactivation of ram 31 the latch lever 27 returns to reengage projection 24 as the needle and bar rise, the needle notch 21 disengaging the bar as the needle follows the movement of the backing material. Five rams serving a group of five needles are spaced around an arcuate member 32, the arrangement being repeated for groups of five needles across the machine. The arrangement is employed in a tufting machine disclosed in Specification 1180580.
