Abstract

1298426 Guards NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 22591/71 Heading D1J In a continuous winding machine e.g. of the co-axial type, with snagger plates 23, 25 between the reels 5, 5' and a traverse guide 15 movable to transfer wire from one reel to the other, damage due to flying about of the cut end of the wire on the wound reel, whilst it is being braked, is avoided by the provision of cylindrical guards 27, 27' moved to enclose the full reel apart from a narrow circumferential gap. The guard may be a cylindrical sleeve, as shown, moved axially by a piston and cylinder 45, 46 as the traverse guide passes switches 49. Alternatively (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the guard may be in two portions, one of which is fixed, the other being moved either axially or radially to enclose the reel after the wire has started its transfer motion.
