Abstract

1296445 Eddy current brakes M MONNEY 9 April 1970 [19 April 1969] 16948/70 Heading H2A [Also in Division D1] A pulley 1 rotated by the running thread of a textile machine is braked by eddy currents induced in a plate by a series of magnets movable axially towards and away from the pulley to vary the braking effect. The pulley 1 is rotatable on a shaft 6, and is braked by eddy currents induced in plate 9 by a series of magnets 12 set in a core 11. The position of the core is initially determined by a manually set stop ring, against which the core is urged by a spring 15-righthand side of Figure. The pulley resistance is reduced by depressing the core with a lug 24 attached to a cable 27-left-hand side of Figure. The cable is controlled by a pivoted arm 29 bearing a roller 32 following a core 33. While the roller is on the low 35 the pulley resistance is at a maximum. The brake is instantly inoperative when the pulley rides on to a high 36, but is reapplied over arc 38.
