Abstract

1288851 Sulphur dioxide from spent sulphuric acid STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 9 Feb 1970 [11 Feb 1969] 6014/70 Heading C1A SO 2 is prepared from spent H 2 SO 4 by burning the acid in a furnace with O 2 and air, together with carbonaceous fuel either already present in the acid, or added, the quantity of air being sufficient to atomize the acid and the quantity of oxygen in the effluent gas being sufficient to avoid the development of reducing conditions (defined) in the furnace. Excessive furnace temperatures may be prevented by injecting quenching liquids into the furnace. The effluent gas may be treated to remove entrained solids, dried, and demisted and then have sufficient air or oxygen added to render it suitable for the manufacture of H 2 SO 4 by the contact process.
