Abstract
1288166 Explosive welding; jointing by tube expanding YORKSHIRE IMPERIAL METALS Ltd 19 April 1971 [24 Feb 1970] 8789/70 Addition to 1149387 Headings B3J and B3R A method of securing a bimetallic tube 1 (Fig. 1) in an aperture 4 of a heat exchanger tube plate 5 comprises arranging the end of the tube in the aperture so that the outer tube 2, which may e.g. be of steel, terminates within the aperture to leave an exposed length of the inner tube 3, e.g. of copper, projecting therebeyond at least to the front surface of the tube plate, and welding the outer tube and the exposed length of inner tube to the wall of the aperture by detonation of an explosive charge in an energy transmitting insert located in the end portion of the tube. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) a bimetallic tube 12 is welded to a bimetallic tube plate 16 the outer tube wall being arranged prior to welding to terminate in the plane of the interface between the metal layers 17, 18 of the tube plate. The layers 17, 18 and the tubes 13, 14 may be of mild steel and copper respectively. Any projecting length of the inner tube is sheared off in the course of welding.
