Abstract

1,078,556. Welding by pressure; making brakes and pistons. DARLITE CORPORATION. April 12, 1965 [Aug. 5, 1964], No. 15567/65. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F2] In a method of cladding aluminium bodies with a ferrous metal veneer, for example, cladding a piston with stainless steel or a brake drum with a mild steel liner, the veneer has a layer of explosives laid on its outer surface and is placed in contact with the body at one edge only to form an angle of 3 degrees, or substantially 3 degrees, with the body and the explosive layer is detonated at the apex of the angle so as to burn across the veneer and progressively impact it on to the body. Heat generated by air friction and the impact melt the interfaces of the veneer and the body which are forced together to form a rippled interface weld. In the embodiments described an aluminium piston (110), Fig. 10 (not shown), is covered on its end face and cylindrical sides with stainless steel, the piston-ring grooves being machined through the side covering. In another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), an aluminium brake drum (210) is lined with a mild steel liner (234). The cladding method may include spraying the aluminium body prior to positioning the veneer with an oxidizing-inhibiting layer of molten molybdenum particles, or alternatively particles of nickel, cobalt or titanium. The term " aluminium " includes aluminium based alloys which contain at least 50% by weight of aluminium and the term " ferrous metal # includes iron and alloys thereof, including stainless steel.
