Abstract

1286679 Surgical pads &c D TORR 29 Aug 1969 [5 Sept 1968 18 Dec 1968] 43088/69 Heading A5R [Also in Division D1] Diapers, catamenial devices &c comprise a water absorbent sheet material 19 of water insoluble fibres such as cellulose fibres and particles of a material such as a polysaccharide gum e.g. guar or starch which can absorb at least 10 times its weight of water to form a soft plastic gel. The particles may be humidified by spraying with steam to increase their adhesion to the fibres. The sheet 19 is covered by a thin water-permeable layer of soft non- woven fabric 21 e.g. of bonded cellulose fibres and backed by a water repellant material 22 e.g. polyethylene. Additional absorbancy may be provided by a sheet 24 of cellulose fibres or the same material as sheet 19. The cellulose fibres may be short wood pulp fibres.
