Abstract

1,219,825. Absorbent laminate. J. P. GALLAGHER. 1 May, 1968 [7 June, 1967], No. 20644/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] An absorbent multi-layer pad includes a liquid-absorbent layer 16 bonded between a bottom liquid-impervious layer 14 and a pneumatic cellular layer 12 comprising sheets 18, 20 with air or fluid cells 22 disposed therebetween, said sheets being sealed together over areas 24 which contain liquid-permeable perforations 26. Layer 14 may be formed on layer 16 by spraycoating and may comprise polyethylene or polypropylene. Absorbent layer 16 may comprise absorbent woven or non-woven natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cellulosic or synthetic fibre mats or batts, open-cell sponge-like sheets, or a mat, mass or batt of hydrophobic fibres, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, nylon (which can retain fluid on their surfaces); a specified layer is a ball of cotton linters treated with a wetting agent. Sheets 18, 20 may comprise plastics. Cells 22 may be hemispherical (as shown), hexagonal or diamond-shaped. Layer 12 may be covered with a soft woven or non-woven fibrous material, e.g. flocks.
