Abstract

1284142 Treating polyacrylonitrile filaments GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP 26 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 14809/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C1] In preparing carbon or graphite filaments a polyacrylonitrile filamentary material is subjected to a preliminary tension-free non-combustive oxidation in air at a temperature of 200-250‹ C. for from 1 to 8 hrs. followed by stretching of the partially oxidized material by up to 200% of its original length in a steam or boiling water environment before being subjected to the conventional steps of non-combustive oxidation under tension and carbonization in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of at least 700‹C. The polyacrylonitrile filamentary material may have been stretched to 150% of its length before being subjected to any oxidation treatment.
