For the suction stroke liquid under pressure is supplied via inlet line 10 and chamber 29 to space 16 in front of the piston 14, the space 17 behind the piston, 13 being connected to a drain 19 via port 20 and port 25 in a slide valve member 23 which is controlled by pressure fluid supplied from line 10 via line 51, a spool valve 30 and line 52. During the suction stroke, pressure liquid is supplied to the pumping chamber 4 via a line 8 and a throttle 9, and tangential and radial passages 7 which create a vortex effect in the pressure fluid to reduce its leakage from chamber 4 and gas in the space 3 is compressed into a receiver 6. At the end of the suction stroke the piston 14 operates the spool 33 of the valve 30 to connect the space 28, via line 52, space 42 and valve outlet 46, to a drain 47, and thus valve member 23 moves to the left, closing the drain 19 and opening space 17 to chamber 29. The compressed gas now acts on the piston 14 to accelerate it and piston 13 to the left, to produce a high pressure pulse. At the end of the working stroke, the pumping piston 13 closes a port 54 which is connected via a line 53 to a space 44 at the end of spool valve 30 separated from the spool 33 by a free plunger 39. Line 53 is connected to the inlet line 10 via a throttle 55 and chamber 29. When port 54 is closed by the piston 13, pressure builds up in space 44 until the force on the plunger 39 overcomes the force on the spool 33, and the plunger 39 and spool 33 move to the left and the cycle is repeated.
