1,171,056. Reciprocating pumps. BENDIX CORP. April 23, 1968, No.19142/68. Heading F1A. After an inlet passage 36 in the pump cylinder 26 has been closed by the pump piston 28 during its forward stroke, liquid drawn in via an inlet port 18 and inlet passages 36, 38 is pumped to an outlet port 20 via an outlet valve 40, passages 58, 60 in a stepped piston 44, an annular chamber 48 between the stepped piston and a collar 46, and a passage 50 in the collar. If the outlet pressure exceeds a predetermined value, it acts on the stepped piston 44 to move it to the left against the action of a spring 54, thereby carrying the cylinder 26 to the left. This delays the closing of the inlet passage 36 by the pump piston 28 until a later part of the forward stroke. If the cylinder 26 is moved sufficiently to the left, the inlet passage 36 cannot be closed by the piston 28, and pressure cannot then be built up within the pumping chamber 34.
