Abstract

1279016 Moulding bladed components NORMALAIR-GARRET Ltd 28 May 1970 [30 May 1969] 27541/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A method of making a reinforced bladed or toothed member, Fig. 1, comprises forming top and bottom moulds 1, 10, assembling filament supporting members 4 and 5, winding the filaments, e.g. pre-impregnated carbon fibres, glass fibres, boron fibres, or any combination thereof, so as to extend across the inner support 4 and to connect with the outer support 5, locating the assembly in between the moulds 1, 10, pouring a material, e.g. a cold-setting or thermo-setting resin, into the mould so formed, and curing the member. The outer supporting member 5 is subsequently removed. In Fig. 7, the member is formed with an integral hub 3, but it can be moulded with a shaft. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the outer filament support member is integral with the lower mould (5). Additional carbon fibre reinforcement in sheet form can be introduced between the filaments. The moulds with a resin tank (18) above them, Fig. 8 (not shown), are located in an evacuated oven, and the resin is forced into the moulds via an outlet (21) under atmospheric pressure admitted to a tank inlet (19) and valve (20). The vacuum in the oven being subsequently released to force the resin into the entire volume of the moulds.
