Abstract
1276049 - Liquid fuel burner NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 28 Oct 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 51293/70 Heading F4T In a liquid fuel burner, atomizer 16 injects a spray of fuel into a combustion chamber 40 formed within a tubular housing 11 on one side of a baffle plate 42 and air is introduced into a peripheral space on the other side of the baffle plate 42 and flows via apertures 48 and 50 to form longitudinally extending counter-rotating vortices. Air from apertures 48 and 50 also cools the combustion chamber walls. A peripherally extending opening 60 in baffle plate 42 near an end closure plate 46 emits air across the end of the combustion zone 40. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) two atomizers and two baffle plates are used, four vortices being produced. The atomizer 16 comprises a sphere 24 over which fuel is fed from a conduit 22, compressed air being supplied via conduit 30 to a slot 32. Surplus fuel is returned to the supply source via conduit 28. Ignition means such as arcing electrodes are provided.
