Abstract

1,272,261. Projectile fuze. FRATELLI BORLETTI S.p.A. 7 July, 1969 [5 July, 1968]. No. 34087/69. Heading F3A. A projectile fuze comprises a support 5 mounted for transverse sliding or rotational movement, a percussion cap 13 slidably mounted in the support, and an independent striking mass 17. A pull-wire 7 secures an inertia bolt 6 in a locking position. When a projectile fitted with the fuze is fired, the bolt 6 sets back and is locked in a rearward position by engagement of a ball 8 with a shoulder 9. Meanwhile a firing pin 2 sets back into a recess 4 in the support 5. When the acceleration is over, the firing pin is moved out of the recess and a spring 15 moves the support to bring the percussion cap into alignment with the firing pin and a powder train 18. The support is in the form of a rack, and its movement into the armed position is delayed by means 12. If the firing pin fails to initiate the percussion cap, e.g. at oblique angles of impact or with soft targets, the mass 1 moves forwards as the projectile decelerates and pushes the cap out of the support 5 and against the firing pin.
