Abstract
1,114,063. Projectile fuzes. MEFINA S.A. 3 March, 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 9302/66. Heading F3A. A fuze for a projectile to be fired from a gun with a rifled bore comprises a support 7 adapted to move transversely under centrifugal force to align a detonator 6 with a striker 4, and a clockwork safety system operating during flight and adapted to keep the striker 4 away from the detonator 6 during a predetermined period following the firing of the projectile. The clockwork safety system comprises an escapement wheel 20 driven by a toothed sector 21 pivoting round a spindle 22. The toothed sector meshes with a pinion 24 coaxially rigid with the escapement wheel 20 and is driven under the action of centrifugal force by an eccentric mass 23, Fig. 6. The toothed sector is provided with a conical recess 35 in which rests a conical collar 5 provided on the striker 4, and an arcuate slot 27 through which the portion of the striker below the collar 5 passes. A spring 28 acting through a socket 29 holds collar 5 in the recess, thereby preventing angular movement of the sector and axial movement of the striker. As soon as the projectile is fired a spring loaded plunger piston 11 collapses within its cylinder 12 in the detonator carrier 7, and the extension 14 of the plunger is withdrawn from an opening 15 in a stationary plate 16 and an opening 18 in the balance wheel 19. The carrier 7 moves transversely under centrifugal force to align the detonator 6 and striker but the balance wheel is maintained stationary by engagement of the collar 5 of the striker in the recess 35 in the toothed sector. As soon as the projectile passes out of the gun the axial acceleration is cut out and the balls 32 roll along the surface 33 under centrifugal force to lift the socket 29 and free the toothed sector which rotates and eventually moves free of the shoulder 5 on the striker to leave the striker perfectly free to move axially. On striking the target a pusher rod 37 urges the striker against the detonator 6. If the projectile misses the target and as soon as the centrifugal force has been reduced sufficiently by the friction of the air, the spring 28 urges the socket 29 and balls 32 downwardly, simultaneously moving striker 4 against detonator 6 to cause self destruction of the projectile.
