Abstract

1,264,853. Boots, &c. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 3 April, 1970 [25 April, 1969], No. 21332/69. Heading A3B. In order to improve the adhesive bond between the lasting margin of an upper and a heelboard, the heelboard has a sheet of resin over its lower surface, the resin being a copolymer of an olefine and a non-hydrocarbon aliphatic monomer or a blend of such a copolymer with a polyolefine. The heelboard can be of any conventional material, e.g. cardboard or fibreboard and the resin layer may extend beyond the heelboard to form the flexible forepart of an insole. The olefine component of the resin may have 2 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene or a mixture of such olefines, and is preferably ethylene. The non-hydrocarbon component of the resin may be an alkenyl halide, e.g. vinyl or allyl chloride; an unsaturated alcohol, e.g. vinyl or allyl alcohol; an amide, e.g. acrylamide; but is preferably an unsaturated ester, e.g. vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate or allyl methacrylate. The preferred non-hydrocarbon component is vinyl acetate. The polyolefine which is blended with the copolymer may be polyethylene or polypropylene and is preferably a "high pressure" polyethylene. The resin sheet may be foamed, having a closed cell structure, and may be subjected to the action of an electrical discharge. The resin sheet may be bonded to the heelboard using a cold or hotmelt adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyurethane and neoprene adhesives as well as hot melt adhesives of the polyester or polyamide type. The same adhesives may be used to bond the lasting margin to the resin sheet.
