Abstract
1345150 Laminates MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 20 Sept 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 50504/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division A3] An article of outer footwear, e.g. a boot or shoe, comprises an upper the outer edge of which is bent round an insole assembly and adhesively bonded on the lower surface thereof, the insole assembly comprising a suitably shaped laminate cut from a sheet of thermoplastic resin laminated to a fabric which forms the lower surface only of the insole assembly. The fabric may be woven, non-woven or knitted, cotton scrim preferably being used. The thermoplastic resin, which may be in the form of a closed cell foam, may be a polyolefin or a copolymer of an olefin, e.g. ethylene, propylene or butylene or a mixture thereof, with 2-17% by weight of vinyl or allyl chloride or alcohol, acrylamide, vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate or methyl methaorylate, or a blend thereof. The molten foamable thermoplastic resin layer may be extruded through a slit die into the nip between a pair of rollers whilst the fabric is simultaneously fed through the rollers, the roller contacting the molten layer being chilled to solidify the layer and optionally being embossed. Alternatively the fabric may be fed to the cylindrical surface of a single roller and a layer of foamable thermoplastic resin extruded into contact with the fabric on the roller so that the layer foams whilst it is in contact with the moving surface of the fabric. The thermoplastic resin sheet may be bonded to the fabric by means of an adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyurethanes, neoprene, polyesters, polyamides or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers. The adhesive may be used as a thin resin film of similar or identical composition to that of the foamed resin sheet which is heat sealed to the fabric before it is passed between the rollers for bonding to the foam layer. The laminates so produced are cut to the appropriate shape for the insole assembly and provided with a heel board, e.g. of cardboard or resin-bonded cellulose fibre board.
