Abstract

1,264,015. Gyroscopes. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd. Oct. 13, 1970 [Oct. 13, 1969], No.50139/69. Heading G1C. A gyroscope comprising a rotor 13 rotatably supported by a spindle 14 on a support member 12 within a gas filled housing 10 is provided with a partspherical gas bearing 11 which is supplied with gas under pressure during rotation of the rotor 13 by an impeller forming part of or connected to the rotor 13. The rotor which is drivable by a motor mounted inside the rotor is arranged co-axial with one or more impeller fans or, as shown, is provided on its opposite side faces with spiral grooves. The fans or grooves, during rotation of the rotor, direct gas from outside the support member 12 to a passageway 19 which is connected to the gas bearing 11, the passageway 19 being provided with a solenoid valve 20 which can be remotely controlled to cut-off the gas supply to the bearing 11 at regular intervals thereby to provide a damping of the gyroscope about a vertical axis 21. An auxiliary gas supply located inside or outside the housing 10 may be provided to supply the bearing 11 with gas under pressure by way of the passageway 19 and a further solenoid valve during run-up of the rotor to its operational rotational speed.
