Abstract

1,261,858. Wells &c. M & H TUNNEL & CIVIL ENG. Ltd. and CROXDEN GRAVEL Ltd. 19 April, 1971 [28 April, 1970], No. 20251/70. Heading E1F. In the driving of a tunnel having lining sections 16, 17 .. connected by flexible joints 30, the sections are successively driven into the ground from a shaft 1 by rams 8 and the joint between the leading two sections is tem porarily rendered rigid whilst the tunnel is driven. The joints have packing in their radial parts and a seal in their axial parts. The leading joint and other joints as necessary are rendered rigid by tie-rods 27 connecting brackets 25 fixed to the sections. The bolts holding the brackets may be hollow to permit supply of ground lubricant. The section 16 may carry a shield 20 manoeuverable by rams 21. The means rendering the joints rigid may comprise members spanning a joint and urged to grip the insides of the sections by screws or rams.
