Abstract

An unsaturated polyester resin is produced by copolyesterifying at least one polybasic carboxylic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof and at least one polyhydric alcohol or ester-forming derivative thereof, and optionally at least one monocarboxylic acid and/or monohydric alcohol and/or hydroxycarboxylic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof), at least one of the reaction components being olefinically unsaturated, and at least one of the reaction components being a cyclic imide of a bicyclooctene carboxylic acid which is at least tribasic, the imide containing at least one functional group capable of ester formation. The preferred cyclic imides are those of bicyclooctene tricarboxylic acid and bicyclooctene tetracarboxylic acid and contain carboxyl or alcoholic hydroxyl groups. They may be prepared by reacting the acid with a compound containing a primary amino group and preferably at least one further group capable of ester formation or at least one further primary amino group. The amino compound may be an aminoalcohol, an aminocarboxylic acid or a diamine. The unsaturated reaction component is preferably maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, aconitic acid, mesaconic acid, acrylie acid, methacrylic acid or crotonic acid. The mixture may also include saturated carboxylie acids such as isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, hexahydrophthalic acid, orthophthalic acid, tetrachlorophthalic acid, tetrabromophthalic acid, benzoic acid, adipic acid, fatty acids, carboxylic acids branched on the α-carbon and dimerized fatty acids, as well as non- copolymerizable unsaturated acids such as tetrahydrophthalic, methyltetrahydrophthalic, endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic and tetrahydrobenzoic acids. The mono alcohols used may be butanol, hexanol, cyclohexanol, tricyclodecanol, tricyclodecenol, tricyclodecane methanol or N - # - hydroxyethyltetrahydrophthalimide. Suitable diols are ethylene glycol, propanediols, butanediols, pentanediols, hexanediols, 1,12 - dodecanediol, neopentylglycol, 2,2,3-, 2,2,4- or 4,4,2-trimethylhexanediol - 1,6, 1,6 - cyclohexanedimethanol - 1,4, tricyclodecanedimethylol and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bishydroxycyclohexylpropane - 2,2. The resin may be homopolymerized or copolymerized with a monomer such as styrene, methyl styrene, vinyltoluene, divinyl benzene, alkenyl esters, acrylic esters, methacrylic esters and vinyl esters. Copolymerization may be effected in the presence of free radical initiators, or with irradiation with U.V. light or accelerated electrons.
