A guide for propelling a threading member 4, 5, 6 for insertion of a flexible hinge pin 9 through the interdigitated loops of belt fasteners 7 secured to belt ends 8 to be joined, comprises spaced members 10, 12 (Fig. 1) or 20 (Fig. 4) contacting the external upper and lower surfaces of the fasteners 7 and acting on an abutment 5 on the threading member 4, 5, 6 when the latter is disposed therebetween. The threading member is a needle having parallel end portions 4, 6 and a centre portion 5 inclined at 45 degrees thereto, an eye in the portion 6 receiving the hinge pin 9, which is preferably a double cord of nylon. In Figs. 1, 2, the guide comprises parallel plates 10, 11 joined together by a wedgeshaped post 13. A roller 12 on the plate 11 presses the fasteners against the plate 10, which is shaped to match the needle 4, 5, 6 contour. As the guide is pulled along by handle 14, the roller 12 and plate 10 together draw the needle 4, 5, 6 with them. In Figs. 4, 5, rollers 20 on arms 18, 19 form the guide members, the fasteners 27 being guided by convergent slots 21, in opposite sides of a block 17. The belts comprise felt 26 secured to edge strips 25 of webbing in which the fasteners 27 are secured. A flap 25a of the webbing is guided by guide bosses 23, the webbing passing between the bosses 23 and rollers 24. The arm 18 may be pivoted clear, and is normally held in its operative position by a turn-button 29. In a modification (Fig. 8) the bosses 23 and rollers 24 are replaced by guides 30 having flanges 32 tapered in plan (Fig. 7, not shown) which engage the rear ends of the fasteners 7 to hold the loops of the fasteners in interengagement while the needle is inserted therethrough.
