Abstract

1,246,308. Sintered metal bodies produced directly from the ores. G. K. N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. Dec. 5, 1969 [Dec. 5, 1968], No. 57708/68. Heading C7D. Sintered metal articles are made by compacting the metal ore to form a green compact which is reduced to the metal and then hot pressed. Iron ore e.g. magnetite or haematite may be mixed with graphite e.g. 19% to give 0À2-1% C in finished article. 5% Ni and Al 2 O 3 to form a dispersion hardened alloy may also be added. One powder of 60 mesh to 250 micron is impacted and heated to 1000‹-1300‹C, in a neutral ore reducing atmosphere e.g. N 2 , propane-air, cracked NH 3 Co-Co 2 , or H 2 . Compaction may be isostatic. The heated compact is hot pressed in a die heated to 250-350‹C. or hot rolled to strip.
