Abstract
1,245,386. Utilizing energy of radiations. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 17 June, 1970 [17 June, 1969], No. 29418/70. Heading G6P. In a radioisotope heat source, the organic liquid, 7, is boiled by the radio-active elements, 6, and condensed at the boiler 8 employing a Rankire cycle. The elements 6 are formed of cobalt-60 or strontium,' clad in stainless steel and mounted between the copper or tungsten blocks 3, 4. An annular shield 5, of depleted uranium surrounds the elements 6. The containment vessel, 1, is surrounded by the heat insulating layer 2 and in the event of severe overheating, the member 15 melts and the unit is detached from cover 9 and falls into pit 18. Alternatively, at temperatures above a datum, the plug 10 melts and admits ambient cooling air.
