Abstract
1422018 Shielded containers COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 25 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19673/73 Heading B4Q A shielded container 1 for conveying radioactive substances such as spent nuclear fuel elements comprises a central shroud 2, an antigamma ray lead core 3, and a heat exchanger 4 disposed in a convection chamber 5 formed between the cam 3 and an outer anti-neutron containment 6. The fuel elements or the like to be conveyed are disposed inside shroud 2, which is sealed by a cover (7) and an end member (8) (Fig. 1, not shown) which provide the same protection as the container 1. Heat exchanger 4 comprises a metal sleeve 10 on which cooling elements such as steel pins 11 are secured. Containment 6 has longitudinal orifices 12 which connect chamber 5 to atmosphere via convergent slots 13, 14. Blocks 16 maintain the spacing between the inner portions 17 and the outer portions 18 and provide the vertically spaced slots 13, 14. Chamber 5 is cooled either by natural connection through the slots 13, 14 or by forced convection by means of bellows (not shown) connected to the orifices 12. As protection against fire, a wet neutron-absorbing material, e.g. a metallic powder in suspension in water can be used for the containment 6.
