Abstract

1,241,688. Stapling tows. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 22 Oct., 1968 [23 Oct., 1967], No. 50039/68. Heading D1F. A continuous filament tow 1 is stapled by passing the tow into a breaker zone between feed rolls 5, 6 and delivery rolls 9, 10 containing breaker 7 and snubbing the tow between the feed rolls and the breaker 7. As shown, the snubbing is performed over 2 stationary non-rotatable guides 11, 12. Alternatively snubbing can be effected by both pins or rolls. Guide 8 regulates the width of the tow. The stapled tow can be rebroken by arranging a further pair of nip rolls (18, 19) after rolls 9, 10, (Fig. 2). The tow can be drawn and heated prior to the stretch-breaking and may be crimped after it.
