In a process of crimping yarn by twisting two yarns together, heat-setting the yarns, and then separating the twist-set yarns, each separated yarn 20 or 21 is passed over a guide 74 or 75, with the guides being laterally movable should the tension in the separated yarns be unequal. The movement of the guides causes the yarn of higher tension to move towards the smaller end of its pair of conical draw rolls 16, 18 or 17, 19 and the yarn of lower tension to move towards the larger end of its pair of draw rolls. In the embodiment shown guides 74, 75 are formed by spools mounted on the ends of arms 72, 73 of a V- shaped spring-tensioned wire member 70 mounted on stud 58 which is rotatably supported. Arms 74, 75 are adjustably urged together by collar 76. Yarn guides 36, 37 maintain the separation point S substantially constant. Conical rolls 16, 17 have a rubber surface, are mounted on a common drive shaft and have rolls 18, 19 pressed against them by air cylinders against the force of removal springs. The separated yarns 20, 21 are wound on packages driven by a common drive roller. Excessive movement of wire member 70 is prevented by U-shaped guide 77, while mercury switches 90, 81 stop the machine if the member moves more than a set amount. In modifications guides 74, 75 are mounted on vertical end portions of generally horizontal arms adjustably secured together and pivotable about a vertical axis, or guides 74, 75 and 36, 37 are formed by bars mounted on a plate pivotable about a horizontal axis, or guides 74 and 36, and 75 and 37 may be formed by a single pair of guide bars mounted on a plate pivotal about a horizontal axis with conical rolls 16, 17 being mounted on parallel shafts on either side of the guide bar.
