In welding large cylindrical parts 1, 2 end-toend, lugs 5, 51 are welded at intervals around the inside or outside end peripheries of the parts 1, 2, the lugs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are provided on a lathe with complementary centring profiles 7, the parts 1, 2 are assembled with the profiles 7 in centring engagement and the parts 1, 2 are joined by welding. The lugs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> may be bolted together. The lugs are removed by arc cutting so that the welding can be completed.
