An automatic or manual arc stud welding machine for welding studs to a tube has a spacing and arc shielding sleeve consisting of two parts 1, 2 of like external diameter the one part 2 having one end for engaging the tube formed with arcuate recesses 6 and another end of reduced diameter to fit in the other part 1. The one part 2 has holes 4, 5. The recesses 6 allow studs to be welded at a closer peripheral spacing.
