Abstract

1,039,570. Welding by fusion. SUPERHEATER CO. Ltd. Dec. 16, 1964, No. 51199/64. Heading B3R. In an arc welding machine for butt welding tubes in which the machine is laterally presented to the tubes and secured thereon, the electrode 5 is carried by a conductive split ring 4 rotatable about the tubes 2, 3 and engaged by stationary brushes 13 which supply welding current. The ring 4 and a worm 18 driving the ring 4 are mounted in a split insulating clamping block enclosing the tubes 2, 3. Each half of the block consists of a bolted assembly comprising plates 9 engaging the tubes 2, 3 and insulating members 7 and 8. The two halves of the block are mounted on the ends of the arms of a securing device, which arms are centrally interconnected by a screw for applying pressure and at their other ends engage other tubes of a workpiece assembly. Gas, e.g. argon, is supplied through a tube 20 to the weld zone and may also be fed to the interior of the tubes 2, 3. In a modification the halves of the block are hinged.
