Abstract
1,129,190. Preparation of ethylene oxide. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 11 Jan., 1967 [13 Jan., 1966], No. 1623/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Ethylene is oxidized directly to ethylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst which has been made by mechanically agitating dry silver powder having a surface area of 3-30 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. with a refractory inorganic support material in the form of spheres having a diameter in the range of from 0À1 to 0À5 inch, whereby silver powder is adhered to the support material. A gaseous mixture of ethylene, oxygen, carbon monoxide, ethane, a trace of ethylene dichloride and the balance nitrogen is reacted at 230-280‹ C. under atmospheric pressure. 66% conversion to ethylene oxide is achieved.
