Abstract

1,123,408. Hose end-fitting assemblies; hoses. AEROQUIP A.G. 19 Oct., 1965 [23 Feb., 1965], No. 44303/65. Headings F2G and F2P. A hose, having an inner tube 36 of rubber or other resilient material and an outer helicallywound or braided sheath 42 of metal natural or synthetic filaments 44, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), arranged substantially at a helix angle of 54 degrees 44 minutes, at which angle internal fluid pressure forces within the hose tending to increase the hose diameter are balanced by correspondingly induced filament forces tending to elongate the hose and reduce its diameter, is provided with an end-fitting consisting of a tubular nipple inserted within the inner tube to expand the inner tube and sheath so that the filaments assume an angle in excess of 54 degrees 44 minutes, and a socket 12 clamping the bared end 48 of the sheath to the nipple, a clearance 52 existing between the end of the inner tube and the portion 22 of the nipple engaged by the sheath. The nipple portion A is sealed to the hose by virtue of the elasticity of the latter and by the fact that fluid pressure acting within the hose during use results in the expanded sheath portion having a helix angle in excess of 54 degrees 44 minutes tending to axially elongate and radially contract. The clearance 52 existing between the inner tube end and the enlarged sheath-clamping portion 22 of the nipple permits slight axial movement of the hose end to effect sealing. The socket is preferably crimped on to the nipple. The hose is provided with an outer protective layer of rubber or other resilient material. In a modification, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), the nipple is formed from metal tubing and has a constant wall thickness, the bared end of the sheath clamped between the nipple and socket being nestled in annular grooves formed therein during crimping.
