Abstract

1,117,537. Collapsible steering shafts. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 27 July, 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 37141/66. Heading B7H. A vehicle steering shaft assembly comprises a shaft having telescoping portions 12 and 14, connected by shearable plastics connections 16 and 18, and which extends axial ly through a jacket 20 mounted at 26 and 30, the shaft being supported within the jacket by thrust bearings 22 and 24, the latter bearing including a portion which shears in response to an axially inward force of shaft portion 14 Bearing 24, Fig. 2, comprises a bush 40 including a portion 42 which breaks away under the said inward force causing connections 16 and 18 to break and the shaft portions to telescope. A trough formed by members 48 and 50 is retained between bush 40 and a circlip 44, and is filled in situ by pressure injected acetal resin to exert a compressive force on the jacket 20. The connections 16 and 18 between telescoping shaft portions 12 and 14 are formed in situ by injection of pressurized acetal resin through a hole 60 in portion 14 to fill a peripheral groove in portion 16, and a second hole 60. The resin in holes 60 act as shear pins. The thrust bearing 22 may be formed by a ballbearing race or by a bush.
