1,170,918. Collapsible steering shafts. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 17 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 49243/68. Heading B7H. In a steering shaft assembly for a vehicle having two relatively telescopically slidable parts 1, 2, the parts are guided one within the other without play by at least two bushes 3, 4 of synthetic plastics or other elastic material. Preferably, the bushes are fitted on the shaft part 2 before it is inserted in the tube part 1 which is then deformed by pressing in the region of the bushes so that a predetermined force is necessary to telescope the two parts 1, 2. A vehicle with the collapsible steering shaft assembly may include a steering column gear change tube comprising two telescopic parts guided one within the other by at least two elastic bushes, a shearable pin securing them against relative displacement until a predetermined axial force is exceeded.
