Abstract

1,202,009. Collapsible steering columns. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 29 April, 1969, No. 21800/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In a collapsible steering shaft assembly comprising a first shaft part 6 rotatably mounted in a guide tube 5 for fixture in a motor vehicle and a second shaft part 9 for connection to the steering gear 4 of the vehicle, the adjacent ends of the shaft parts 6, 9 are each formed with a fork 10, 13, and a coupling plate 16 disposed between the four limbs 11, 12 and 14, 15 of the two forks is connected to each limb by a respective shear pin 17, 18 and has a contoured periphery which embraces the limbs. The shear pins 17, 18 break to allow axial movement of the shaft part 9 towards the shaft part 6 when an excessive rearward force is applied to the shaft part 9 in a frontal collision. A collar 7 welded to the shaft part 6 co-operates with a ring 8 fixed in the guide tube 5 to prevent rearward movement of the shaft part 6 relative to the guide tube.
